First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS to Olympic gold medalist, Gabby Douglas from VA, for winning the Gold in the All-Around Gymnastics, Michael Phelps from MD, for breaking the Olympic record for most medals by any athlete and the entire TeamUSA!
Watching the opening ceremony and the subsequent games thisÂ first week of the 2012 Olympics got me thinking about Olympic fashion for the general observer. Hmm what would I wear to Olympic Park to witness the games?
Well obviously it depends on the sport you are attending but one of my simple but favorite outfits for an Olympic event features a maxi dress, gladiator sandals, silver jewelry, aviator sunglasses, and a red cross-body bag to add the full effect of red, white and blue. This outfit is comfortable and trendy, so you will definitely be spectating in style!
Then I thought, LondonÂ weather can be rainy and a bit dreary so I would need a look that can factor in the weather but still be cute.
For a more fun look, this outfit is a perfect inspiration! Union jack high-waisted shorts with a red, ruffled tank top, paired with converse sneakers and a white tote bag.
We can’t forget to include some DC boutiques where you can pick up pieces similar to the ones above!

The team that’s brought you the most “Fab” fashion insight, restaurant reviews, party recaps, celebrity interviews and more is commemorating its fifth year in business, and is celebrating by giving back.
The Fab Empire, the award-winning site devoted to acting as ‘the pulse’ of the young professional scene in the nation’s hottest cities, is hosting a virtual “Five Years of Fab Book Drive” to benefit students in Baltimore and Washington DC. The Fab Empire hopes to provide students with the tools they need to chase their dreams and achieve success, citing shocking statistics on literacy that prove the academic system in our country needs help.
“Since 1983, 10 million American students have reached the 12th grade without learning how to read,” says the Fab Empire. “With so many cut backs in our educational systems, students need access to books in order to achieve their goals. Let’s bridge that gap.”
The team’s goal is to raise $5,000 in total, to be divided in half between DC Scholars Stanton Elementary and George Washington Elementary School in Baltimore. Donors can make contributions online. Every $2.50 raised translates to one new book for a student in need.

Ginger Root Design is a local shop that offers tailoring and eco-friendly design by ReVamp for both men and women. In addition, the shop sells art, jewelry, and accessories made by local artisans. They are currently looking for sewers to join their team.

Tailoring: The available tailoring position will involve a variety of standard alterations of men’s and women’s clothing. Our sewing shop specialty is creative “re-purposing” and “re-imagining” of damaged or unflattering clothes. The available position offers potential growth towards working on more of these inspired projects.
Piece work: The available stitching positions will assist us in producing our DC-sewn, eco-friendly house line. For home contractors, we pay by piece, and require that the first garment is constructed at our shop so that we are on hand for any questions and quality control. To sew our line at home/an alternate location, contractors must have access to a serger, multi-stitch sewing machine, and an iron. We provide all materials, but you need to provide equipment (needles, pins, bobbins, etc.). Stitchers working at our sewing shop will have set hours, depending on our current production schedule, and will use our machines and notions.
**We’re looking for someone with a sunny outlook on life (like our own!), great work ethic, who’s excited by new challages, and genuinely enjoys sewing. We love what we do, and we want you to as well!
Requirements for all available positions:
A minimum of two years professional stitching experience is required. Relevant schooling (either technical college or university) is strongly preferred, but additional experience in tailoring or theatrical costume shops will suffice. Applicants should be comfortable with home and industrial sewing machines, sergers, a variety of hand stitches, and most standard alterations (hemming pants and jacket cuffs, taking in the waist of pants and side seams, rolled hems on dresses, etc.). Knowledge of garment construction is essential.
A sewing test will be administered as part of your job application, and will include:
- Sewing a lapped zipper and an invisible zipper
- Rolled hem on a lightweight zipper
- Hand sewing sample of slipstitch, slant hem stitch, cross or “X” stitch, shanked button, and a snap.

It started out as all companies wanting to “Go Green” on behalf saving the world from global warming. Then everyone wanted to wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness, where proceeds from collections of pink items would go to the Susan G. Komen foundation. All aspects of the retail market were joining in. Whether it was the NFL Shop selling pink gear or purified drinking water brands claiming their packaging was the most eco-friendly containing the least plastic- the marketing tactic to persuade consumers that their company is the most in touch with the problems of the world to gain a competitive advantage is a craze being used by all sorts of retailers.
Now, the fashion industry, at the local and national levels, is really starting to take this marketing tactic and run with it, or should we say design with it. H&M alone has their “Conscious Collection”-a line whose garments’, season after season are made up of sustainable materials. The mass-market retail store also introduced their “Fashion Against AIDS” line, whose garments are inspired this season by tribal patterns. H&M partnered uop with international artists and illustrators to create a custom clothing collection to raise money and bring awareness to the worldwide HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Other fashion retailers who have decided to join the support of global issues trend include, The GAP who carries the INSPI(RED) logo on various garments to raise money for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, founded by humanitarian and U2 singer himself; Bono. Another popular example is footwear brand TOMs. With every purchase of a pair of TOM’S, a pair will be donated to a less fortunate child in Africa.
This movement within the fashion industry to support global issues is even being strongly implemented at the local fashion industry level. Washington, DC is home to the charitable organization Fashion Fights Poverty, whose mission is to alleviate poverty through trade, skill building and community empowerment through the fashion, textiles and design industries. FFP held their annual gala this past March, and will host a special night of shopping at Sheyla’s Boutique of Georgetown tomorrow, Jun.20.
A 21 year old Maryland Native and Senior Fashion Merchandising major at Stevenson University fashion has consumed Kelsi’s life from a young age and continues to as she travels to experience the fashion scenes from various cities across the world. Kelsi is thrilled to be back in the DMV and help bring to light the rising fashion scene right here in DC.
